Linux: install and build server

Build OpenGenesisLINK on Linux

These steps cover Debian/Ubuntu on AMD64 or ARM64. Select the .NET 8 SDK package for your specific distribution and CPU architecture. Use the published stable source for production builds.

1. Install prerequisites

sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y git curl ca-certificates unzip libgdiplus libc6-dev

Follow the official Microsoft instructions to configure the .NET 8 SDK package source for your Linux distribution. Once that feed is available:

sudo apt install -y dotnet-sdk-8.0
dotnet --info

If the SDK package cannot be found, configure the appropriate Microsoft package feed; installing only the runtime is insufficient to build the server.

2. Get the stable source

Download latest stable source ZIP . Extract it into a new directory and open the folder containing OpenSim.sln.

Or clone with Git and check out the tag shown on Veröffentlichungen:

curl -fLsS -o opengenesislink-stable.zip https://opengenesislink.de/download/server/latest.zip
mkdir -p ogl-source
unzip -q opengenesislink-stable.zip -d ogl-source
cd "$(find ogl-source -mindepth 1 -maxdepth 1 -type d | head -n 1)"

3. Generate project files and compile

chmod +x ./runprebuild.sh ./compile.sh
./runprebuild.sh
./compile.sh

Alternatively, after prebuild: dotnet build --configuration Release OpenSim.sln.

4. Standalone mode (first local test)

cd bin
cp -n OpenSim.ini.example OpenSim.ini
cp -n config-include/StandaloneCommon.ini.example config-include/StandaloneCommon.ini
# Select Standalone.ini or StandaloneHypergrid.ini in OpenSim.ini [Architecture]
./opensim.sh

SQLite is the default for basic standalone configuration. Check simulator output and region settings.

5. Grid mode with Robust

Grid operation requires compatible Robust/Simulator settings, a shared database and appropriate network/firewall security. Do not enable standalone and grid architecture includes simultaneously.

cp -n Robust.HG.ini.example Robust.HG.ini
cp -n config-include/GridCommon.ini.example config-include/GridCommon.ini
# Select GridHypergrid.ini in OpenSim.ini [Architecture]
# Configure database/hostnames and start Robust first:
dotnet Robust.dll
# In a separate terminal, from bin:
./opensim.sh

Troubleshooting

Verify the SDK with dotnet --info, consult BUILDING.md, and back up all data/settings/keys before upgrading an existing installation. Windows build instructions.
