Windows: install and build server

Build OpenGenesisLINK on Windows

This guide covers Windows 10/11 and Windows Server using the .NET 8 SDK. Visual Studio is optional. The published Projektarchiv stable release currently contains source code rather than a ready-to-run server installer.

1. Install tools

Install the .NET 8 SDK for your CPU architecture. Git for Windows is recommended. Visual Studio 2022+ is optional.

winget install --id Microsoft.DotNet.SDK.8 --exact
winget install --id Git.Git --exact
# Open a new PowerShell terminal:
dotnet --info
git --version

PowerShell provides ZIP extraction through Expand-Archive. Visual Studio, MSVC and a separate Mono SDK are not required for the ordinary .NET 8 command-line build.

2. Download latest stable source

Download latest stable source ZIP . Extract the ZIP and open a PowerShell terminal in the folder containing OpenSim.sln.

Alternatively download and extract the latest stable source ZIP with PowerShell:

Invoke-WebRequest -Uri "https://opengenesislink.de/download/server/latest.zip" -OutFile ".\opengenesislink-stable.zip"
Expand-Archive -Path ".\opengenesislink-stable.zip" -DestinationPath ".\ogl-source" -Force
Set-Location (Get-ChildItem ".\ogl-source" -Directory | Select-Object -First 1).FullName

3. Compile the server

.\runprebuild.bat
dotnet build --configuration Release OpenSim.sln

compile.bat does not exist in the inspected current Projektarchiv tree, so dotnet build is used after the actual runprebuild.bat step.

4. Standalone configuration

cd bin
if (-not (Test-Path .\OpenSim.ini)) { Copy-Item .\OpenSim.ini.example .\OpenSim.ini }
if (-not (Test-Path .\config-include\StandaloneCommon.ini)) { Copy-Item .\config-include\StandaloneCommon.ini.example .\config-include\StandaloneCommon.ini }
# Select Standalone.ini or StandaloneHypergrid.ini in OpenSim.ini [Architecture]
dotnet .\OpenSim.dll

5. Grid and Robust

if (-not (Test-Path .\Robust.HG.ini)) { Copy-Item .\Robust.HG.ini.example .\Robust.HG.ini }
if (-not (Test-Path .\config-include\GridCommon.ini)) { Copy-Item .\config-include\GridCommon.ini.example .\config-include\GridCommon.ini }
# Select Grid.ini or GridHypergrid.ini in OpenSim.ini [Architecture]
# First terminal:
dotnet .\Robust.dll
# Second terminal:
dotnet .\OpenSim.dll

Configure database and network addresses, permissions, backups and secure secrets before using a real public grid.

Help

Run dotnet --info and check BUILDING.md. Do not overwrite running production files. Linux build guide.
